'Cloud' Needs A Definition!

The term 'Cloud' needs a little definition and also some perspective.  The first 'cloud services' were launched in the 1960s by Tymshare.  And the definition remains essentially unchanged -- user services where the computing is 'remote' and the users are sharing the services.

 

Recently, the industry has focused on remote storage, remote computing power, and share applications -- like Salesforce.com (where we have added the term 'SaaS' for Software As A Service).  

 

Today the 'Cloud Wars' are upon us.  The first shots were fired by Google to erode Microsoft's lock on the desktop.  The response from the Redmond Crowd is Office 365 -- a combination of Office and SharePoint, offered as a fraction of previous prices.  Coming soon will be the addition of worldwide video calling, delivered under the brand name of 'Skype' (recently purchased by Microsoft for $8.5 Bil.)  This is a high-stakes and expensive war!

 

And, the real winners are you and I.  Microsoft  is giving us billions and billions of dollars of productivity power for a few dollars per month.

Arthur was based in Ocho Rios for twenty years -- his primary residence, Rio Chico, was located on a peninsula outside the village.  The property was used for movie, television, and magazine shoots. 

 

The Rio Chico experience launched a lifetime study of 'Inventive Living' -- the pursuit of integrating family, business, and fun.  The Esch Family business is actually called, 'Inventive Living, Inc'.

Microsoft has two 'killer' applications: Office and SharePoint.  We all grew up on Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook -- and we are not changing, because we have 12 zillion hours invested in these desk top basics. 

 

Lots of us also use SharePoint and sometimes don't even know it.  SharePoint is a place to work with our compatriots -- sharing ideas and work.

 

Office 365 is the integration of our desktop and our sharing operations.  What makes Office 365 compelling is the pricing -- $25/month/seat buys it all.  And now Microsoft is throwing in voice, video, chat, and social communications as a bonus.  Coming next is integrated Skype.
